One of my favorite parts of working at the library is helping people find the right book to read next. I try to read a little bit of everything but let’s be honest—there’s just no way to read it all! (trust me I try) Sometimes, I need to turn to readers’ advisory tools to make sure I’m suggesting the best options for someone looking for their next great read. Here are some of the tools you can use to find books that match what you like, and these tools can really help when you’re stepping out of your usual genres.

First and foremost, don’t underestimate the power of your librarian. We’re here to help! I make it a priority to stay updated on the latest book releases and read as much as I can, even amidst my usual reading. With the sheer volume of books published each year, it can be a bit overwhelming.

To make the search easier, think about what you enjoyed in your previous reads. Was there a particular element that captivated you? Consider comparing your favorite books to TV shows or movies you love; any extra context can guide us in finding something you’ll enjoy.

TV Tropes

The purpose of TV Tropes is to catalog and analyze recurring themes, motifs, and conventions—known as “tropes”—found in television shows, films, literature, video games, and other forms of media.

Novelist Plus

I can’t tell you how excited I am that the library offers this service.

Novelist Plus is an online database designed to assist readers, and librarians by providing resources related to fiction writing and literature. It offers tools such as author and title biographies, book summaries, and recommendations. The platform website is valuable for those seeking to explore new reading material or enhance their writing skills, as it provides insights into character development, plot structure, thematic elements. Overall, Novelist Plus serves as a comprehensive guide for navigating the world of fiction.

Search by book title, author, and more to find both title and author read-alkies or click into a book’s information to find the linked element which interests you and go from there to find titles that also have that element.
